What matters when identifying a wild mushroom
A mushroom’s color and cap shape can change with age and weather, so reliable identification requires several features. Useful clues include whether the underside has gills, pores, teeth, or a smooth surface; how the gills attach to the stem; the texture of the cap; and whether the stem has a ring or enlarged base.
The substrate is just as important. Note whether the mushroom grows from soil, leaf litter, a living tree, or decaying wood. Replay the video and look for multiple specimens, nearby trees, bruising or color changes, and a clear view of the stem base. Photographing the cap, underside, stem, and habitat gives an expert much more to work with.
Never eat a wild mushroom based on a photograph, an app, or this video. Some toxic species closely resemble edible ones. Use the footage as a nature-identification challenge and seek a local mycology group for any safety-critical determination.
